Reject emergency rule, ACN urges N’Assembly

The Action Congress of Nigeria has advised the National Assembly to reject President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration of a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

The opposition party, in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, described the President’s decision as “lacking in original thinking.”

It said the Boko Haram crisis would have ended a long time ago if the use of force was capable of ending it.

Lagos introduces technical education in primary schools


LAGOS — Lagos State Government, through the State Technical and Vocational Education Board, LASTVEB, is to introduce technical and vocational education to primary and junior secondary schools.

Speaking at the ministerial briefing to mark the second anniversary of the second term in office of Governor Babatunde Fashola, Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, said the decision was taken to increase the awareness on the importance of technical and vocational education, which she said was the answer to employment challenges.

Muslim students fault Lagos on Hijab


The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, on Wednesday said it was not part of any decision on the use of Hijab in Lagos State public schools as claimed by the government.

Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, was reported in the media to have said the decision not to allow the use of Hijab, except for prayers, was a consensus reached at a meeting chaired by the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture Mr Oyinlomo Danmole and attended by stakeholders, including MSSN.

The CRV utility car was on a very high speed. Suddenly, the driver applied the brakes and started reversing the car. When he finally stopped, the driver, who spotted a French suit, alighted from the car, with a carriage suggesting that he was the owner of the automobile.

He beckoned on one of the maize sellers along the Karu/Nyanya Expressway. After some bargaining, he left with five cobs of maize wrapped inside old sheets of newspaper before it was later put inside a polythene bag.

Soon, some other road users came around to buy the same farm produce. While the majority of them preferred the roasted ones, others went for the fresh ones which they would cook with beans.

Soldiers storm Borno,Yobe, Adamawa


LAGOS—Troops, yesterday, moved into Yola, Adamawa State capital and Maiduguri, capital of Borno State, barely 24 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a State of Emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states in response to Boko Haram insurgency which has claimed several lives and destroyed many property.

Residents and journalists saw military trucks carrying over 2000 soldiers into Yola and Maiduguri, yesterday, in compliance with the president’s orders. The military launched the first phase of its campaign to secure the country’s borders and flush out all terrorists and insurgents from the northern states.

2000 soldiers, fighter jets deployed to Borno state




About 2,000 security operatives and military hardware, including fighter jets have been deployed to Maiduguri ahead of yesterday’s declaration of State of Emergency.

In neighboring Yobe State, it is not clear how many soldiers were deployed but residents said shortly after the declaration of state of emergency, stop and search operations have been intensified in the state capital while movement have been restricted in other places.

Residents said the deployment of the federal troops, including the army, navy, air force and operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) began at the weekend.

Dear compatriots,

1. It has become necessary for me to address you on the recent spate of terrorist activities and protracted security challenges in some parts of the country, particularly in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Plateau and most recently Bayelsa, Taraba, Benue and Nasarawa states. These unfortunate events have led to needless loss of lives and property of many innocent Nigerians including members of our security forces.

18-year-old undergraduate stabs father to death



Residents of Langbasa, Ajah, Lagos State are still talking about 18-year-old Olanrewaju Kayode-Aremu, who stabbed his father, Victor Kayode-Aremu, to death.

Police authorities said the suspect stabbed his 46-year-old father to death while the man was attempting to enter his room.

We learnt that Olanrewaju was a student of University of Ilorin, Kwara State, but was expelled because he had poor grades.

Film makers petition Jonathan over Danjuma Dabo’s appointment as NFC boss


The Nigerian motion picture practitioners under the auspice of the Screenwriters Guild of Nigeria has petitioned President Goodluck Jonathan over the appointment of Engr. Danjuma Dabo as the new Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation, (NFC).

The guild, in a statement signed by its president, Mr. Chike Bryan rejected Engr. Dabo’s appointment, urging Mr. President to use his good office to reverse the appointment so as not to jeopardise the existing relationship between his government and Nollywood practitioners.
