Felix Nchikwo, Nigerian student based in Canada dies after MMA fight

A Canada-based Nigerian student has reportedly died after competing in mixed martial art contest in Michigan, USA on Saturday.

US authorities say the 35-year-old Nigerian man, who collapsed and died after the fight, had been living in Canada on a student visa.

Police Capt. Jeff Baker identified the man as Felix Nchikwo, but known in the ring as Pablo Elochukwu.

Baker did not release Nchikwo’s place of residence or school in Canada or his Nigerian hometown.
Authorities say he told a trainer he wasn’t feeling well after losing the fight Saturday night at a Port Huron American Legion Post.

The heavyweight, who sources say weighed 265 pounds for his MMA debut on Friday and was also a three-time gold-medal winner on the local grappling circuit, was competing in an unsanctioned event. According to sources, neither he nor his opponent was required to undergo pre-fight medicals for their bout.

The first two rounds were said to have been mostly grappling, but the inexperienced fighters both began showcasing signs of fatigue, especially in between rounds two and three.

Sometime in the third round, Nchikwo was mounted and was not intelligently defending what were deemed to be soft hammer fists. The referee was forced to stop the bout.

Authorities conducted an autopsy on Sunday but say it was inconclusive, and they’re now awaiting the results of forensic tests to seek the cause of death.

Former Deputy Governor Of Anambra State Dr. Chudi Nwike Killed By Kidnappers

SaharaReporters has learned that Dr. Chudi Nwike, the former Deputy Governor of Anambra State who was kidnapped on March 19, has been killed by his kidnappers who had demanded a N30 million ransom and actually collected a negotiated amount.

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) said that the body was identified at the Agbor Police Station in Delta State by the Anambra State Chairman of the party), Chief Amaechi Obidike, State Secretary Barr Emeka Ibe, and the victim’s brother, Dr.Bufo Nwike.

The statement noted that the family had negotiated and paid a ransom prior to the discovery of the body, Bufo Nwike handling the negotiations and arranging to pay to the kidnappers N5million at an undisclosed location in Delta State.

That ransom was in paid on April 5, but the kidnappers, after collecting the money from the courier, cut off all further communications. The body was discovered thereafter.

“We are tremendously ashamed of the circumstances of his death and wish we could now erase from history that a former Deputy Governor of a State in Nigeria died in this manner,” ACN said in the statement.

The party called on the security agencies, in view of the fact that they did not succeed in tracking down the abductors of the former Deputy Governor while he lived, to “rise and smash all obstacles on the way to unearthing the abductors and killers of ACN’s rare gem, an embodiment of peace and knowledge.”

Rick Ross Dropped From Reebok Over 'Rape' Lyrics: Now What?

God Forgives, Reebok Don't. That was the most popular tweet on Twitter Thursday (April 11) after the sneaker giant succumbed to the mounting pressure from women’s rights groups who rallied in protest of Rick Ross’ controversial 'rape' lyrics on Rocko’s “U.O.E.N.O.” by dropping Rozay from their roster of brand representatives. So, what happens now? Are fans satisfied?

"Reebok holds our partners to a high standard, and we expect them to live up to the values of our brand. Unfortunately, Rick Ross has failed to do so," Reebok told MTV News in a written statement issued. "While we do not believe that Rick Ross condones sexual assault, we are very disappointed he has yet to display an understanding of the seriousness of this issue or an appropriate level of remorse," the statement read. "At this time, it is in everyone's best interest for Reebok to end its partnership with Mr. Ross."

The MMG Bawse, who was part of the shoe company’s popular "It Takes A Lot to Make a Classic" campaign, came under fire for rapping the line, "Put Molly all in her champagne, she ain't even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain't even know it,” which was largely considered a glaring example of date rape.

After Ultra Violet activists gathered in front of Reebok's flagship store in New York City in protest last week, the "Diced Pineapples" MC tried to apologize for his lyrical transgressions via Twitter, but his social media mea culpa was ultimately dismissed as insincere and devoid of the gravitas needed to make full amends for his misogynistic verse.

“I dont condone rape.Apologies for the #lyric interpreted as rape. #BOSS,” Ross tweeted last Thursday (April 4), adding, “Apologies to my many business partners, who would never promote violence against women. @ReebokClassics @ultraviolet.”

In addition to losing his role as brand ambassador with Reebok, the Mastermind rapper was not included on the remix of the song that started it all in favor of Wiz Khalifa, because, as Rocko puts it, “the type of traction that the record has as far as radio and all over the country, it puts me in a position where I have to change it."

Ross has yet to comment on his dismissal, but Internet trolls wasted no time chiming in with jokes, rants and varied comments agreeing and disagreeing with the Adidas subsidiary's decision. His MMG team is standing firm though: @MeekMill: Reeboks right next 2 FILA when it come 2 sneaks that shit corny... I was only was feeling swizz & tyga projects... #boom

@PersiaNYC “If Rick Ross couldn't get noone to wear Reebok's he damn sure wasn't gonna influence dudes to put molly in a chicks drink #YallGoinTooHard”

@DasJohnDoe “Rick Ross got dumped from Reebook.....it's not like anybody still wears Reebooks anyway.”

@CoolKidsCloset “Come on Reebok. It was cool to Sign Rick Ross knowing he promotes drugs, guns, killing, b****&h*** etc. Why drop him after 2 bars now?”

@GeneWilly “Rick Ross lost his Reebok deal because of that Molly bar? Lmfaoooo”

@NaijaWarrior “Reebok could care less about what Rick Ross says. Just dont hurt their sales.”

@AshinKushington “I Gotta Feeling Reebok Really Wanted To Keep Rick Ross”

@TMJR1914 “Rick Ross done fcked up... He ain't een kno it”

@Kenny_Burrs “Not condoning what Rick Ross said but the Media OD'n on him now though. I've heard wayyyyyy worse”

@darijorozayy “In all honesty I thought that line was sick that Rick Ross said. It went perfect with the song”

@mikeztyme “Rick Ross is a good example of, 'the same sword they KNIGHT u with they gon GOODNIGHT you with'”

@UptownStackz “Confused y reebok dropped rick Ross tbh. He talks about killing ppl n selling drugs in every single record but was still the face of reebok”

@IndigoRush_ “This one little line should not be messing with Rick Ross career like that. These feminist chicks need to get over themselves . “

@LazyEyedWonder “Rick Ross is a great example of what getting faded in a studio can get you.”

@DragonflyJonez “Rick Ross released by Reebok for rapping about rape. Toungue twister! nh nh nh nh nh nh nh nh nh nh nh nh nh”

@AndOne9d9 “Let me say this: I think it was stupid 4 Reebok 2 dump Rick Ross. They never should've picked him n the 1st place! What did they expect?”

Do you think Reebok made the right move in dismissing Rick Ross as brand ambassador?

Alleged fraud: Oyo ex-commissioner, wife arrested

Former Commissioner for Trade, Investment and Cooperative in Oyo State, Kazeem Adedeji, was on Thursday arrested in Ibadan by men of the Special Anti-Fraud Unit, Lagos.

The former commissioner was arrested with his wife, Biodun, at the latter’s office (Enterprise Bank in Agodi, Ibadan).

One of Adedeji’s associates, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the former commissioner was at the bank earlier in the day to visit his wife.

He said, “As soon as he (the husband) left, the wife put across a distress call, informing him that a team of police officers were about to whisk her away from her desk.

“Honourable had to make a detour to know what was really the matter. On getting to the scene, the police team told him they were sent to Ibadan to effect the arrest of the two of them”.

It was gathered that there was a mild drama at the scene of their arrest as the bank manager tried to resist the police on the grounds that the arrest of Adedeji’s wife was effected without prior notice.

The couple were whisked to Iyaganku police station in Ibadan before being driven to Lagos around 1.30pm.

Lagos wants hoodlums out of the state

Lagos State Government says miscreants and touts are anathema to its mega city dream and as such will not be allowed to operate in the state.

Chairman, Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement), Bayo Sulaiman, a Superintendent of Police, said this on Thursday during a meeting in Alausa with the executives of National Union of Road Transport Workers.

He urged them not to allow miscreants and touts in motor parks.

Sulaiman said, “There have been complaints of touting, pick-pocketing and petty crimes in some motor parks at Oshodi, Mushin and environs.

“The government will not fold its arms and watch Oshodi return to its pre- transformation state where lawlessness was the order of the day.”

He also condemned the attitude of some commercial drivers, who disregard bus stops and stop by the roadside to pick passengers.

He said such an action obstructed the free flow of traffic, adding that such offences would no longer be overlooked.

Sulaiman advised the union members to limit transport activities to parks, adding that any violation would no longer be tolerated.

The representatives of the NURTW promised to abide by the rules and regulations of the state.

Meat consumption needs to be checked, not stopped’

Lagos – Dr Mairiga Peters of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, has said on Wednesday that checking meat consumption would help in reducing its negative effects in the human system.

Peters in Lagos, while responding to a research by the Cleveland Clinic, U.S., that lack of such checks was injurious to human health.

The research indicated that the L. Carnitine, an amino acid, said to be abundant in red meat, and the Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) could aid atherosclerosis.

It also said that the bacteria in the human digestive tract metabolise the compound L. Carnitine, turning it into TMAO to promote the ailment in the human bodies.

The lecturer said that the safety from the effects of TMAO required periodic reduction in the level of the compound in the individual’s system, to protect them from atherosclerosis.

He described Atherosclerosis as a deadly but preventable disease, which causes the hardening and narrowing of the arteries giving, leading to heart attacks, strokes and cardiovascular disease.

“L.Carnitine plays an important role in helping to transport fatty acids through the system, where the acids can be converted into energy.

“Proper levels of this amino acid in the body helps to promote overall physical fitness as any intake of fat will be efficiently used to fuel the functions of the body.

“It also works hand-in-hand with other important amino acids, such as lysine and methionine.

“Working with carnitine, methionine helps to reduce fat content in the liver, and ensures that the body maintains the ability to expel toxic elements,” he said.

Peters recommended bio-chemical applications like boiling and cooking, and reduction in meat consumption, to reduce the content of the compound in red meat and other substances containing toxins.

He said, however, that as toxin accumulation in the body occurs over time due to improper metabolic processing, outright stoppage of meat consumption could be a disservice to the body.

Peters said that total stoppage of meat consumption would bring about the denial of the body of the supply of L.Carnitine, required for the maintenance of physical fitness. (NAN)

Chicken-killing virus may kill cancer cells – study

Washington – U.S. researchers said that they have identified a genetically-engineered chicken-killing virus as a promising treatment for prostate cancer in humans.

The so-called `Newcastle disease virus’, which harms chickens but not humans, kills prostate cancer cells of all kinds, including hormone-resistant cancer cells, according to the study published in the Journal of Virology.

“This potential treatment is available for immediate pre-clinical and clinical trials,’’ lead author Elankumaran Subbiah said.

“We are looking for commercial entities that are interested in licensing the technology for human clinical trials and treatment. Newcastle disease virus has yet to be tested as a treatment for prostate cancer in patients.’’

About one in six men will develop prostate cancer.

Patients typically receive hormone treatments or chemotherapy, both of which have adverse side effects.

Subbiah said that the development of new treatment methodologies will not only better fight prostate cancer, but also lessen the side effects commonly associated with hormone treatments and chemotherapy.

Newcastle disease virus affects domestic and wild bird species, especially chickens, and is one of the most economically important viruses to the poultry industry.

Although it can cause mild conjunctivitis and flu-like symptoms in humans who have been in close contact with infected birds, it does not pose a threat to human health.

Scientists first documented the cancer-fighting properties of Newcastle disease virus in the 1950s, but it is only with recent advances in reverse genetics technology that they have turned to the genetically engineered virus as a possible treatment.

“We modified the virus so that it replicates only in the presence of an active prostate-specific antigen and, therefore, is highly specific to prostate cancer.

“We also tested its efficacy in a tumor model in vitro,’’ Subbiah said.

“The recombinant virus efficiently and specifically killed prostate cancer cells, while sparing normal human cells in the laboratory, but it would take time for this to move from the discovery phase to a treatment for prostate cancer patients.’’

Earlier human clinical trials for other types of cancer with naturally occurring strains of Newcastle disease virus required several injections of the virus in large quantities for success.

Subbiah believed that the recombinant virus would be able to eradicate prostate cancer in much lower doses.

It would also seek out metastatic prostate cancer cells and remove them.

Because it is cancer cell-type specific, “the recombinant virus will be extremely safe and can be injected intravenously or directly into the tumour,’’ Subbiah added. (Xinhua/NAN)

FG wants relocation of Bakassi indigenes before August

Vice President Namadi Sambo on Thursday said the Federal Government was desirous of completing the relocation of Bakassi indigenes before August.

Sambo said this during a meeting of the Presidential Committee on Bakassi and Right of the Displaced People which he presided over at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“The time to round off with the issue of Bakassi has become pertinent and everything must be concluded before August 2013,” he said.

Sambo said by the end of April, there must be a final report from the committee, taking into consideration the interest of the people of Bakassi.

He asked them to ensure that their recommendations also include the time frame.

“The time frame is to guide government on what to do as there is only four months left to conclude everything concerning the plight of the Bakassi people,” he added.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor of Cross River State and Chairman of the Presidential Committee, Efiok Cobham, thanked the Vice President and the Federal Government for their commitment to the Bakassi problem.

He stressed the need for the committee members to visit Bakassi and to ascertain the area where the people want to be resettled.

He explained that the Cameroon gendarmes, about a week ago, evicted about 2,000 Nigerians.

He added that Cross River State was currently harbouring another set of displaced people who lived in an open area with their families.

In her remark, Senator Ita Giwa also lamented the continuous harassment of Bakassi people by the Cameroon gendarmes.

She said the harassment was a breach of an agreement earlier reached on the Bakassi issue.

Meanwhile, Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, told journalists at the end of the meeting that Federal Government would take appropriate actions to protect the displaced Bakassi people against harassment.

Illegal advertisers of trado-medicine will be jailed – NAFDAC

Hard times await Traditional Medicine Practitioners, TMP, who flaunt the laws of the land as the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has threatened severe sanctions, including a jail term for illegal advertisers of herbal medicines.

Reading the riot act in Lagos during a stakeholders’ meeting on “Regulation of Herbal Medicines in Nigeria”, Director General of the Agency, Dr. Paul Orhii, said: “Time has come to address the challenges confronting herbal medicine practice in Nigeria that has given room for unethical practices and exploitation of unsuspecting Nigerians.

“We have to weed out the fake from the legitimate practitioners and that is why we are stepping up enforcement from today, illegal advertisement of herbal medicines will attract severe sanction and even a jail term.

“There is need for sanity in the practice. But we are not going to seat back and watch people take advantage of Nigerians by advertising medicines that has no proven efficacy,”

Lamenting the pharmacological effect of various herbal products, Orhii said: “It is wrong to advertise a herbal medicine if you have not proven that your medicine is effective and safe by working with NAFDAC, Nigerian Institute of Pharmaceuticals Research and Development, (NIPRD) and other universities.

He disclosed that, already, NAFDAC has a pharmarcovigilance report of a pregnant woman who took herbal medicines and gave birth to a child without limbs.

“NAFDAC is not interested in your formula. Bring your medicines, and register with us. We just want to do toxicological studies and make sure that the medicines are safe. Then, carry out efficacy study with NIPRD to make sure that it is effective in curing the condition it is claimed to cure.

“After that, we move on with the approval process. Then, you can go and patent your formula so that nobody will steal your formula. I have been very concerned about proliferation of traditional medicines particularly the herbs, roots and other allied products that have been put down in the public domain through the media with ridiculous and unsubstantiated claims of cure for ailment including serious ailment like HIV/AIDS,” he added.

He regretted that unsuspecting Nigerians rely largely on advertorials adding that, it behoves on us as a scientific developing body to either prove or debunk such claims scientifically so that people are not hoodwinked into spending huge sums of money for treatment that are ineffective and sometimes may be too dangerous and cause harm.

Orhii, however, noted that herbal supplements can be beneficial to consumers but can also cause serious side effects and potentially dangerous conditions.

Further, he disclosed that a committee has been set up to look at health conditions such as malaria, HIV/AIDS, cancer, asthma, diabetes among others that could be tackled with local herbal medicines.

He regretted that Nigeria with the heaviest burden of malaria and large medicinal plants was yet to develop a medicine that could treat the disease even as the whole world is looking up to Nigeria to develop such medicine.

“We continue to import these anti-malaria drugs from other countries and today, the anti-malaria drugs have remained the most counterfeited drugs in Nigeria. We should be making these medicines and selling to other countries. But here we are, spending huge amounts on medicines that we can produce locally.”
