What every Nigerian must know about Guinea worm

Guinea worm disease, also known as dracunculiasis, is a parasitic infection caused by the nematode roundworm parasite Dracunculus medenisis.

Guinea worm disease is contracted when people ingest drinking water from stagnant sources containing copepods (commonly referred to as water fleas) that harbor infective Guinea worm larvae.

Nigeria is on the verge of attaining recognition as a World Health Organisation, WHO, certified guinea worm-free country.

Over the last couple of decades, the Nigeria Guineaworm Eradication Programme, NIGEP, has been pushing eradication efforts to the extent that over the last 52 weeks, no verifiable case of the disease has been reported.

Prostitutes learn English for football fans in Brazil

Brazil (AFP) – “Good morning, girls!” Igor Fuchs exclaimed as he greeted his students at the start of English class in this southeastern Brazilian city.

But this is no ordinary crowd and the curriculum, for the most part, is focused on sex props.

Fuchs teaches English to prostitutes so they can give a warmer welcome to tens of thousands of football fans headed here for June’s Confederations Cup, as well as next year’s World Cup.

The city’s 80,000 sex workers are counting on brisk business as authorities predict 40,000 tourists will be in town next month for a total of three matches June 15-30. A whopping 140,000 are expected to follow for the 2014 World Cup.

With that in mind, the Association of Prostitutes has been offering free English classes to its members at a local mall since March.

“We teach basic expressions but also have demonstrations with erotic paraphernalia so they can learn the names, how to use them and propose them,” said Fuchs, a volunteer who also teaches Spanish and French.

Talented, but refused to drop out

In a season when some artistes are dropping out of school to embrace music, others have proved they could combine development of their talents with schooling, writes CHUX OHAI

Many years ago, parents didn’t like children who preferred a career in music to medicine, law or engineering. Musicians were generally regarded as occupying the lowest rung of the social ladder and, so, they were hardly respected.

Although they worked hard at their chosen vocations and sometimes, travelled far beyond these shores, many musicians were hardly seen as useful members of the society. Most of the time, they were dismissed as social misfits.

Ibori loses appeal in UK

former Delta State Governor, Chief James Ibori

The jailed former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori, lost a legal appeal on Thursday against a 13-year prison sentence for embezzling £50m in one of Britain’s biggest money-laundering cases.

Ibori, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party and a behind-the-scenes kingmaker, who ran Delta State for eight years, was trying to get his sentence reduced.

His lawyers argued that the original judge had indicated the term would be shorter.

Judge Antony Edwards-Stuart rejected the argument at the appeal hearing and said money laundering should attract close to the maximum 14-year sentence.
