Angry passengers block Abuja airport runway

Angry passengers on Thursday evening blocked the runway of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, preventing planes from taking-off or landing.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that the blockade was caused by passengers who disembarked from an Arik Air flight that was meant to take them to the Margaret Ekpo Airport, Calabar from Abuja.

According to reports, the flight that had the Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke, on board, was denied landing at the Calabar airport at about 5.30pm by the station manager due to safety concerns.

ASUU strike: NUT threatens to shut down schools

The Nigeria Union of Teachers on Thursday gave a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities to end the strike embarked upon by lecturers in the nation’s public universities.

The NUT President, Mr. Michael Olukoya, stated this in Abuja at the end of the union’s meeting, NAN reported.

ASUU, had since July 1, embarked on a strike it described as “comprehensive, total and indefinite.”

The lecturers are protesting against the non-implementation of an agreement they entered into with the Federal Government in 2009.

Pastor, two kids killed as Boko Haram Islamists open fire in church

Truck crushes 12 in Ogun

No fewer than six people were feared dead, while six others were critically injured after a tipper driver rammed into roadside traders at old Ota Toll Gate in Ogun State.

 We learnt that the accident, which happened around 11am on Thursday, was caused by brake failure.

Eyewitnesses said the sand-filled tipper marked STOCKINGER STEYR and with number plate JJJ 551 XB, ran into the traders who were selling pepper, oil and bread among others.

An eyewitness said, “The incident happened around 11am. The tipper was coming from Lagos when it had a brake failure.
