The bitter truth about sugar

                                                  The bitter truth about sugar

Sugar is sweet, and that’s an obvious statement! Yet, researchers say its consumption is fraught with health problems.

Sugar is colourless or white when pure, and brown when less refined. It is obtained commercially from sugarcane or sugar beet and less extensively from sorghum, maples, and palms.

Sugar comes in granules, cubes, and all the various mixes of glucose, fructose and sucrose, not forgetting the so-called high fructose corn syrup found in many salad dressings, ketchup, coffee creamers, etc.

Of course, there is natural sugar in fruits, but they are also rich in fibre, which slows down the release of the sugar molecules. When consumed, fruits nourish the body — as opposed to the way prolonged and excessive use of processed sugars destroy health.

For surviving stroke, Idowu Animashaun sings Thanksgiving

                                                   Idowu Animashaun

Juju musician-turned evangelist, Idowu Animashaun, is still fulfilling the musical side of his life, writes AKEEM LASISI

Fans of Apola King, Idowu Animashaun, who have been missing his deep, clear voice will be opportune to hear him sing again soon. There is a indication that the musician, who was a popular juju maestro before he became a born-again Christian, is planning to release a new album – a gospel album, though.

Perhaps unknown to many people, Animashaun did not really quit music, despite the fact that he became a full evangelist in 1985, after a memorable romance with juju, the genre he shared with other legends that include King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. Apart from preaching the gospel – as the President of the World Hope Ministry in Badeku, Ibadan – he has, in the past few years, produced six gospel albums. These include From Darkness to Light, God is Faithful and Ileri Oluwa. Now he is working on the seventh, which, he says, is very special to him.

Deaths in Nollywood: actors, actresses have rejected Guild’s health scheme – Ibinabo

Actors Guild of Nigeria President, Ibinabo Fabrisima came under fire at the Nigeria Entertainment Conference held recently in Lagos when legendary film maker Amaka Igwe in her opening presentations accused the guild of having no proper health insurance schemes for members.

Mrs Igwe had in her paper titled: The Nollywood Paradigm – reflections from an unapologetic commercial Nollywood film maker accused the Guild of for long not taken the health concerns of members with utmost importance; citing the death of J.T Tom-West who died in an undisclosed hospital after an auto accident in September 2006.

Mrs Igwe said the Guild had no identity documents for members or any form of health insurance arrangements that members can fall back on in cases of extreme exigencies which she said had delayed help for late Tom-West.

Hafiz Oyetoro’s controversial move from Etisalat to MTN as a brand face seems to have changed his fortune for good, writes CHUX OHAI

South Africa-based scholar, Prof. Kole Omotosho, and lecturer at Adeniran Ogunsanya College of Education, Hafiz Oyetoro, do not belong to the same generation. The distance between Nigeria and SA also implies that they cannot be meeting each other constantly. Yet, they both have something in common.

They have the enviable record of successfully combining their work as lecturers with advertising. Apart from the fact that Omotosho is a writer, best known for his controversial novel about Nigeria – Just Before Dawn – he has made a name for himself in SA where his face has graced several advert bill boards. The latest is the one in which he is advertising for Fidelity Bank Plc.

How women can earn more

Meg, a married woman with two children, presently earns N60,000 as monthly salary. In order for her to earn this amount she left her husband behind and relocated to a cosmopolitan city with her children. Her reason? She wanted to make enough money to supplement her husband’s income to support the children’s education.

A quick analysis of the monthly salary, in relation to the costs of living in the city, means a big chunk of the salary doesn’t belong to her. She will give a portion to transport owners, a part she will give for clothing to enable her dress well to fit into where she works, she will pay market women for food items and other basic needs. Also, she may have to buy lunch for herself while at work and if she is a religious gal, she will pay her dues of offering and ten per cent. At the end of all payments, she will be left with less than N20, 000 as real income.
