POWER GENERATION: PHCN’s failure pushes Customs to independence

The notorious incompetence of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) may have driven the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) into generating its own power requirements independently, particularly to maintain the integrity of its ever-expanding information communication technology (ICT) project.

This emerged during a visit to the Customs Headquarters, Abuja, recently by journalists, as part of a retreat on Effective Media/ Public Relations Synergy for Maritime Development, organised by the Maritime Reporters’ Association of Nigeria (MARAN) at the Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, Abuja, last Friday.

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) – Carlos Tevez advanced a compelling case for a place in Manchester City’s FA Cup final team with an effervescent display in his side’s 1-0 win at home to West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday.

Tevez will now hope to get the nod on Saturday when City tackle Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Victory took City seven points clear of Chelsea in second place, 10 points below champions Manchester United, while West Brom, who have not won in seven games, remain eighth.

Nigeria may have 500 private jets by 2020

The Federal Government has said that Nigerians will acquire about 420 private jets within the space of seven years from 2013 to 2020, which will add to the 80 currently in operation.

This came just as international experts said that Nigeria and China topped the list of countries currently buying private jets, following recession in North America and Europe.

The Federal Government, in the National Civil Aviation Policy, 2013, unveiled in Abuja on Friday, a copy of which was obtained by our correspondent, said the general aviation or private jet sector currently had about 80 planes with a potential to grow to 500 by 2020.

The bitter truth about sugar

                                                  The bitter truth about sugar

Sugar is sweet, and that’s an obvious statement! Yet, researchers say its consumption is fraught with health problems.

Sugar is colourless or white when pure, and brown when less refined. It is obtained commercially from sugarcane or sugar beet and less extensively from sorghum, maples, and palms.

Sugar comes in granules, cubes, and all the various mixes of glucose, fructose and sucrose, not forgetting the so-called high fructose corn syrup found in many salad dressings, ketchup, coffee creamers, etc.

Of course, there is natural sugar in fruits, but they are also rich in fibre, which slows down the release of the sugar molecules. When consumed, fruits nourish the body — as opposed to the way prolonged and excessive use of processed sugars destroy health.

For surviving stroke, Idowu Animashaun sings Thanksgiving

                                                   Idowu Animashaun

Juju musician-turned evangelist, Idowu Animashaun, is still fulfilling the musical side of his life, writes AKEEM LASISI

Fans of Apola King, Idowu Animashaun, who have been missing his deep, clear voice will be opportune to hear him sing again soon. There is a indication that the musician, who was a popular juju maestro before he became a born-again Christian, is planning to release a new album – a gospel album, though.

Perhaps unknown to many people, Animashaun did not really quit music, despite the fact that he became a full evangelist in 1985, after a memorable romance with juju, the genre he shared with other legends that include King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey. Apart from preaching the gospel – as the President of the World Hope Ministry in Badeku, Ibadan – he has, in the past few years, produced six gospel albums. These include From Darkness to Light, God is Faithful and Ileri Oluwa. Now he is working on the seventh, which, he says, is very special to him.
