Kidnappers may release Bamigbetan, Lagos council boss today

LAGOS — Strong indications emerged, yesterday, of the possibility of the abducted Chairman of Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan re-gaining his freedom, as the kidnappers promised to let go their captive this morning at an unnamed location.

According to a source, who preferred anonymity, the kidnappers got in touch with the family negotiator and assured them to be prepared to receive Bamigbetan at an undisclosed location this morning.

“As we talk, the kidnappers are getting in touch with the family which has kept hope alive for the family and well wishers of Bamigbetan but we pray and sincerely hope that
the abductors will keep their promise.

“It is obvious they are not assassins, they are only after money. We thank God for that and every effort is on to meet their demand. This is all I can say for now,” the source said.

This came even as prominent Lagosians were still visiting the wife and family of the abducted chairman.

On the roll call of visitors, yesterday, were the wife of the Lagos State Speaker, Mayowa Ikuforiji, and her entourage. The wife of Governor Babatunde Fashola, Dame Abimbola Fashola and wives of some local government chairmen also visited the family, yesterday, to join them in offering supplication to God.

Bamigbetan was abducted by gunmen who waited for him on his way home from an event, after the close of work, on Monday.

Chief Registrar debunks Lagos CJ’s abduction rumour
Meantime, the Chief Registrar of the Lagos State High Court, Mr Gafar Safari, yesterday described as unfounded the rumour that the state Chief Judge, Justice Ayo Phillips, was kidnapped.

In an official reaction to the widely circulated hearsay, the Chief Registrar queried how somebody who travelled out of the country for Magistrate’s conference could be kidnapped in her residence.

According to him, the Chief Judge who travelled to The Gambia for the parley, yesterday, is billed to return to the country, weekend.

He said: “What do you say, kidnapping the CJ? That is far from the truth. That is a pure lie. It is in the imagination of those peddling such rumour.

Also, one of her police aides, who does not want to be quoted, debunked the alleged abduction, noting: “There was nothing like that.”
